Your membership will entitle you to reduced rates to attend our great seminars that touch on topics of local interest and for which we generally receive CLE credit; our various networking and social functions (like Our "Meet the Clerks" reception and the always popular Holiday party); and our outings (like the night at the Somerset Patriots and the Annual Golf & Tennis outing). There are many other benefits and services with membership in the SCBA.
We also provide opportunities to serve on various substantive and event committees, for public service in our activities such as Law Day and the High School Mock Trial Competition or through participation in the very popular "Legal Runaround 5K Race (in conjunction with the Annual Tour of Somerville - US Bicycling's oldest competition) sponsored by the Somerset County Bar Foundation.
Most importantly, you can share in the camaraderie and networking opportunities our Bar Association has always provided. Our website enhances our lawyer referral service, and highlights additional programs, seminars and benefits. The calendar is frequently updated so check it often!
As always, joining the Bar Association is free for Law Clerks and our friends at Legal Services.
Just fill out the Membership Application Form and return it as soon as possible with the appropriate check made payable to the SCBA. You may also pay your dues with MasterCard or Visa.
Affiliate membership is available to persons who are not members of the Somerset County Bar Association or any other county bar, but are active as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant. A person may also join who is qualified through education, training or work experience and employed or retained by a law office or governmental agency or other entity in a capacity or function that requires the performance, under the direction and supervision of a lawyer, of specifically delegated substantive legal work, that, for the most part, requires sufficient knowledge of legal concepts, that if there were no Paralegal or Legal Assistant, the lawyer would perform the task.
Affiliate members enjoy all benefits of membership except that they may not vote or hold office in the Association or serve as Chair of an Association Committee. Affiliate members pay dues and assessments as established by the Board of Trustees of the Association ("Board").
Pass the word and tell your friends, associates and partners to join you as a member of the Somerset County Bar Association.Back to the Top

The SCBA has numerous committees dealing with substantive areas of the law, (i.e., Civil, Criminal, Family, etc.,) and working committees for the Bar (i.e., continuing legal education, young lawyers, etc.). Committee Co-Chairs and committee members meet periodically with the judiciary to discuss issues affecting Somerset County, new developments in the law and to plan seminars or other events. The SCBA Lawyer Referral Service benefits both the public and our members by providing a means by which a prospective client can locate an attorney. Members of the public who wish to retain an attorney, call the SCBA office and the coordinator assists in finding a suitable referral. Also, the SCBA website has a Lawyer Referral Service page (see tab on left side of this page) on which the public can peruse biographical information on lawyer members. Lawyers may enroll in the program by going to the LRS page of this website. Back to the Top

Mock Trial Competition
Sponsored by the Somerset County Bar Foundation, each year from January to March, dozens of member attorney volunteers coach and judge Somerset County High School students who compete in the Somerset County Bar Foundation-sponsored Mock Trial Competition. Each year teams of students square off in the Somerset County Courthouse and present a "trial" complete with opening statements, testimony of witnesses and closing arguments. Real judges and attorney volunteers hear the cases and ultimately decide which school will represent Somerset County in the State-wide competition and potentially in the National event.
The SCBA hosts cocktail parties, receptions and dinners throughout the year that give our members a chance to socialize and network in a relaxed atmosphere with other attorneys and local judges. Members receive discounts to these social events which include our:
Officers and Trustees Installation Dinner in September which kicks the year off. This is held in conjunction with the Foundation’s Scholarship & Community Awards dinner and Basket Raffle fundraising event.
In October, the SCBA hosts its annual "Meet the Clerks" reception where the Somerset County Superior Court Judges introduce their law clerks.
In November, the SCBA Young Lawyers Committee (YLC) hosts a cocktail party for new members to meet and greet the officers, trustees and committee chairs. Frequently members of the judiciary also attend this event. It is a good place to learn more about our organization and opportunities for involvement.
The Holiday Party in December is always well attended as together we share the holiday spirit. We also provide opportunities for our guests to volunteer time and / or donate funds to the Bar Foundation and Legal Services of NW Jersey to assist these organizations in their community outreach programs.
To help celebrate the New Year, the YLC hosts another cocktail party. Frequently notable guest speakers including jurists, are asked to briefly speak on subjects relevant to the Association-Judiciary relationship.
In January or February, the SCBA teams up with other Bar Associations from the Vicinage (Hunterdon and Warren Counties) for a Vicinage Dinner. Sponsorship of the event rotates between the three counties. The SCBA hosted the Vicinage Dinner in February, 2008, where Chief Justice Stuart A. Rabner of the New Jersey Supreme Court was our guest speaker. Please check the calendar for updates.
The advent of spring and summer brings more opportunities to get together. There is another YLC party where we say good-bye to the departing court clerks and welcome in the new .
The SCBA organizes a number of fun events for members, their friends, clients and families during the year. We host an annual Golf and Tennis Outing in May/June or September; a night at the Bridgewater Patriots in June or September where we encamp in the picnic area with family, friends and co-workers; and one or two softball games with attorneys and members of the Prosecutor's and Sheriff's Offices held in June and August.
From time to time, the Bar will host a special reception or dinner to mark an important event such as the retirement or appointment of a judge or other noteworthy event.
Periodically, the SCBA also organizes a trip to Washington, D.C. where members are sworn into the United States Supreme Court. The SCBA reserves rooms and organizes trips for members and their families to make for an exciting weekend and Monday swearing-in.Back to the Top
